These are troubled times, also for the Dutch ornamental floriculture sector. In order to provide some support, our minister of Economic Affairs regularly advises the Dutch business community on export activities, through their website, newsletters and informative meetings.

When I then read that the Dutch Center for Trade Promotion is planning a meeting for exporters to the USA, entitled 'Count your Blessings - Cut your Losses', it does little to cheer me up. The meeting is specifically intended for people from the Dutch flower bulb sector. It will discuss Dutch successes in the USA. But the down side will also receive some attention, according to meeting organizers. He writes, “You will receive tips on how to minimize risks in the USA, along with information about your (reduced) options if your customer gets into financial difficulties.”

Less freight
That we find ourselves in difficult times is also evident at our national airport, Amsterdam Schiphol. Pallets with flowers that arrive directly from the world’s largest flower auction near the Dutch town of Aalsmeer depart from there for the USA. As a result of decreased demand, activity in the freight sheds and on the platforms has dropped off dramatically. But the freight that does get loaded on the aircraft follows a familiar pattern. The parcels are not massive, but they are extremely varied – cartons with diverse flowers, exclusive varieties, each and every one of the highest possible quality.

New opportunities
The Dutch product does especially well in the USA in the higher market segment. Because of the quality and reliable delivery all year around, event planners enjoy working with this special material. Understandably, there are fewer events at present. The decline in flower trade between our country and the USA is a logical consequence of this. But one thing is certain, “change is coming”. The Dutch sector is looking for new ways to serve their American buyers and meet the competitive challenge coming from South America. It is no easy task. But we will succeed. Overcome a crisis? Yes we can!
