The Netherlands’ struggle to control the water continues even today. The need for water storage clashes with the land available for residential, commercial and recreational purposes. A broad association of firms has come up with a surprising solution – the world’s first-ever floating greenhouse.
Latest gadgets
The foundation (floating body) consists of a combination of EPS (expanded polystyrene), normally used as insulating material, and steel fiber concrete. A greenhouse with all the latest gadgets is fitted on top of the floating body. The revolutionary aspect is that it is built directly on the water. The demonstration model was nominated for the 2005 HortiFair Innovation Award 2005 in the 'Technology/Services' category, ending in the top three.
Multi-purpose idea
The first floating greenhouse is operational in the municipality of Westland. It exemplifies the potential of the new technology. The initiators come from within and outside the ornamental plant sector. They expect to use the idea for other purposes, such as residential living.
The floating greenhouse is an initiative of Dura Vermeer, Unidek (insulation and system firm), Gakon (greenhouse and heating industry), Van der Arend Agrotechniek, Wilk van der Sande (installation firm) and A&N Luiten B.V. Scherminstallaties.
