At this moment, the eyes of the Dutch flower auctions are all focused on a Gerbera that bears the name of an exotic cocktail. Let’s party!

The first striking attribute about the Gerbera 'Daikiri' is its flamed orange-red petals with their creamy yellow bases. These contrast wonderfully with the nearly black center and circle of fiery red stamens. A sweet mix of colors with a truly exotic look. Could ‘Daikiri’ provide the perfect décor for a Caribbean party? Don’t forget to serve the cocktail, for which it is named. The Daiquiri recipe: 2 parts of white rum and 1 part of lemon juice shaken with a couple of spoonfuls of cane sugar.

Gerbera 'Daikiri' (vbn-code 22096) is a good-sized mini Gerbera with its flower diameter of 2.5 to 3 inches. The stems have an average length of 26 inches. The Dutch FloraHolland auction had the premier product introduction, as the first stems were auctioned in August 2003. Sales to this date have reached 400,000 stems and ‘Daikiri’ is now also being auction at the Aalsmeer auction.

Family
Gerbera is a member of the Asteraceae family.

Varieties
Gerbera are divided into the large flowered and mini Gerbera categories at the Dutch auctions.
A Gerbera is assigned to one of these categories based on the flower diameter. A flower with a diameter of less than 3 inches at its narrowest point is categorized as a mini Gerbera. Gerbera Daikiri therefore is a mini Gerbera.

Popular on special day(s)
May 31st: "No Smoking Day": Some years ago the Swedish Association of non-smokers started to hand out orange Gerberas on May 31st. The orange Gerbera was adopted as a symbol of that day. A Gerbera is given to someone who does not smoke on May 31st. In 2001, the Dutch non-smokers Association also adopted the idea of the orange Gerbera as a symbol of May 31st. Perhaps the date and the orange Gerbera will take on some international significance?
