With a flower diameter of 5 to 7 ½ inches this variety is not exactly small, but there are varieties with even larger flowers. Unfortunately the stems of these larger sized Hippeastrum often break in two because of the weight of the flower. This is luckily not a problem for ‘Superstar’, whose stems have been specifically bred to shoulder the burden of four extremely large Hippeastrum trumpets in full flower. In fact it is not necessary to insert sticks into the hollow Hippeastrum stems of ‘Superstar’ to keep them upright.
The hefty size of ‘Superstar’ and the combination of red and white will guarantee curious glances and looks of interest from keen customers as the opening of each trumpet flower is an exciting adventure. Even the vase life of this variety is super which has proven to be at least ten days. It comes as no surprise that the flower was awarded the ‘Grandeur’ title at the Dutch FloraHolland auction in 2007 – a prestigious title awarded to new flowers and plants that exemplify the power of innovation.
Hippeastrum ‘Superstar’ (Dutch auction Code 27961) was introduced to the market last year. During that year of introduction, a total of 43,000 stems were sold at an above average auction price. For this reason supply volume will be increased to 50,000 stems for the coming year. The average stem length is 30 inches and the flower is available from September to March exclusively from suppliers who are customers at the FloraHolland auction in Naaldwijk. ‘Superstar’ will also be available from suppliers who are customers at the Aalsmeer auction starting in the autumn of 2008.
