If Dianthus ‘Lion King’ enjoys the same success as the musical of the same name, this new standard carnation should have no complaints.

The amply filled, double bloom is slightly serrated and has a smooth, pale orange color – similar to that of the wise Lion King in the musical. Although orange colored carnations generally have colored margins, ‘Lion King’ is the exception to the rule. The method of cultivation is also unusual. These carnations are planted in May and harvested – all at one time - in September and October, with the plants then being dug up in November. Compared with perennial carnations, these have a heavier quality and Dianthus ‘Lion King’ (Dutch auction code 25449) has an excellent vase life. Sales of 50,000 stems are forecast for this year at the Aalsmeer flower auction.
