Euphorbia fulgens is originally from Mexico. The Euphorbia family is very diverse. It includes flowers and plants that differ greatly in appearance. The Christmas Star (Euphorbia pulcherrima) also belongs to this variety. The generic name, fulgens, means sparkling or radiant.

  • The vase life of the standard Euphorbia fulgens is between 8 and 12 days. For the Euphorbia racemes, it is between 6 and 9 days. Keep the storage period as short as possible.
  • Store the flowers in water with a shelf-life preservant, at a temperature of 46°F. If the flowers are kept dry for too long of a period, the leaves will turn yellow and fall off, along with the buds.
  • Avoid temperature fluctuations, drafts or ethylene sources such as smoke, ripening fruit or exhaust gases.
  • When all the bracts are open, the flower is ready to bloom. Flowers that are not ready to bloom will not open when they are purchased. When buying, pay attention to the the stiffness of the stems and a good distribution of the umbels.
  • Cut away limp stems. The more that stems are cut, the greater the risk of sap being released. To prevent this, hold the stems in water that has a temperature between 140 and 212 degrees Fahrenheit for a few seconds.
