Pot plant market success: Hydrangea macrophylla ‘Early Blue’ < back
The intensely blue colour of the flowers of Hydrangea macrophylla ‘Early Blue’ is special in itself. However this Hydrangea also has some advantages in terms of quality.
Generally speaking Hydrangeas are known to flower profusely but the flowering potential of Hydrangea macrophylla ‘Early Blue’ can truly be called phenomenal. For example, a plant in a 9 cm pot will produce six or more flower heads as well as sturdy stems that need no support. If they are supported this is more because the growers have acquired the habit!

Thanks to its compact size and the relatively small leaves ‘Early Blue’ is not easily damaged in transport. The root system is also stronger than normal and this makes the plant more able to tolerate too much or too little water. After flowering for four to six weeks indoors, the plant can be planted out in the garden. Its name refers to the plant’s early flowering habit.

Hydrangea macrophylla ‘Early Blue’ (vbn code 26969) was launched at the Dutch flower auctions in 2006. In the first season 268,000 plants were sold at an average price of 1.98 euro each. This year a rise in supply is forecast. The season runs from January to July with a peak in June. ‘Early Blue’ is available from FloraHolland and Aalsmeer in 9, 11 and 13 cm pots.
