For their shape and colour
Berries are on display all year round in Emma McGeehan’s shop in Sheffield. “They have such special shapes and colours, they make it easy to create wonderful contrasts. I particularly like them in wedding flowers.”
“In my opinion the average consumer sees berries as belonging to autumn. This is when they sell best in our shop. However, I always have them in stock because they can be used to make magical combinations. I adore Hypericum ‘Jade Flair’, because of its lime green colour. Blue Viburnum, with its softly glowing berries, is another big eye-catcher. The most popular berries in our shop are different varieties of Hypericum and Viburnum. Although the white to pink berries of Symphoricarpos are very attractive, our customers are not prepared to pay for them. This is because the plant is a familiar weed in and around Sheffield. Despite this, the berries look fabulous mixed with bicoloured roses such as ‘Nicole’ and ‘Dolce Vita’. Special flowers are made extra special by the addition of berries.”
